Berlin

Introduction

I’ve already stated this earlier on the site but I am an unabashed fan of this city. From the very first time you step foot into the city, you get a feeling that there is a drum beating a different beat to life here when compared to other large cities in Europe. If you are looking for history, this place has it in spades. To say it was the epicentre of 20th Century political history is not an understatement. The culture that exists has seen it on the cutting edge of film, theatre and music from the 1920’s to the present day. You’ll see on this page my take on the city. I’ve tried to include things that may be helpful & also a little bit interesting.

Tips & Links

Berlin is serviced by a extensive public transport system.  The train system along with buses and trams cover the vast majority of the city and makes virtually all areas accessible. The VBB combine all your transport needs in Berlin into one area, the link provides you with information and costings related to Berlin and surrounding areas.

The train network is broken up into three branches;

U-Bahn – serves 175 stations and 80% of the 155 km is underground. The network services 9 lines (named U1 through to U9) which connect different areas of the city.

SBahn – Is more extensive and reaches beyond Berlin city limits into the neighbouring state of  Brandenburg. The S-Bahn consists of 16 lines, 166 stations and is 332 km in length.

Regio – This is abbreviation for the regional train system that links Berlin with other destinations. If you want to travel to Sachsenhausen for example, you would be looking at the RE 5 from Berlin Hbf to Oranienburg.

Tip

I always buy a ticket that covers both A & B sectors. What you require will be based on the length of your stay and where your accomodation is located. Also do your sums as you can save a little bit by buying a multi-day ticket rather than a single. Compare the prices and see how it works out. Little victories can add up in the long run.
