Zuihōden Mausoleum

The Zuihōden Mausoleum is the ornate resting place of Date Masamune, founder of the Sendai Domain. Built in 1637, the mausoleum dazzles with intricate woodwork, vivid colours, and gold accents. Surrounded by towering cedar trees, the site also includes the tombs of Masamune’s descendants and a museum showcasing personal artefacts of the Date clan. Reconstructed after WWII, Zuihōden remains a serene tribute to one of Japan’s most influential feudal lords.

Sendai Castle Ruins

Located atop Mount Aoba, the Sendai Castle Ruins mark the former stronghold of Date Masamune, the legendary “One-Eyed Dragon” who founded the city in 1600. Though the original structures were lost to war and natural disasters, the site retains its majestic stone walls, panoramic views of Sendai, and the iconic equestrian statue of Masamune.
